Free Medical Clinic at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre, Fiji Islands
On Saturday, July 27, 2019, the members and volunteers of Sai Prema Foundation, Fiji along with One Fiji Volunteers and staff of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre hosted a free, dedicated clinic for 103 students and staff of Montfort Boys Town.
Montfort Boys Town is a boarding school dedicated to providing welfare and education to challenged and underprivileged male youths, so that they can lead a better life and have a better future. It is located approximately half an hour’s drive from Suva City and Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre.
On Saturday morning, two bus-loads of students from Montfort Boys Town arrived at the medical centre. They were welcomed by the members of Sai Prema Foundation, Fiji.
Soon after, the registration started and basic health screening was offered to all the students. The health screening was conducted by the medical centre nurses and assisted by laboratory and medical students. The screening consisted of height, weight, blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
After screening, some of the students were referred to the general practitioners and physicians for a comprehensive check-up.
There were volunteer dentists and optometrists as well, so the students also had the opportunity to get their teeth and eyes checked.
Free medicines were dispensed to the patients by the medical centre pharmacist and volunteer intern pharmacist. Most of the students were in good health. However, some of them had skin conditions (mostly fungal and bacterial) and these were treated accordingly.
The students were also given health and wellness talks by members of Sai Prema Foundation, Fiji. They were also shown the video ‘Gift of Life’ on free children’s heart surgeries and how the Foundation was in the process of building the South Pacific’s first Children’s Heart Hospital.
The clinic concluded by midday. After this, a sumptuous lunch was served to all the students and the volunteers. The event ended with the students offering a song of gratitude to the volunteers!
Certificates of Gratitude were handed out to all the volunteers. A first aid kit was gifted to the staff of Montfort Boys Town. After group photos were taken, the students and the staff left the medical centre for their school.
Overall, it was a wonderful day for both the volunteers and the guests from Montfort Boys Town.
