Homeless Shelter Feeding in Manhattan, Kansas

Since December, few youths in the Manhattan, KS area have been conducting monthly feeding at the homeless shelter in town, called Manhattan Emergency Shelter Inc. (MESI). Although they never get to meet the beneficiaries of the warm vegetarian meals they bring, the manager taking the meal drop-offs is very appreciative of their warm gesture.

On the third Saturday of every month, the youths gather to drop off fresh, hot meals. The first two months, freshly made Mexican food of vegetable fajitas, tortillas, rice, beans, cheese quesadillas, chips, salsa, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo (salsa fresca) were served with fruits or cupcakes as desserts.

On top of that, from this week on, they are dropping off breakfast grocery for the entire week. This will continue as a weekly Seva project. Gallons of milk, boxes of cereals, bananas and oat meal were dropped off for the week’s breakfast supplies.

The youth are realising the mission of Swami, where the feeling of love and care from one heart reaches the other and the being is drenched with gratitude for the opportunity to serve and the opportunity to love. Selfless service is truly a gift in itself!

Last month, when the youth dropped off pizzas for the thirty or so residents who usually live there, they were showered with so many “thank you” again and again that they decided to repeat it this Saturday as well. With cheese and vegetarian pizzas the youth served cold drinks as well as brownies to the delight of the recipients. Despite ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, the shelter allowed the dropping off of lunch and the youth served with zeal and delight.
