Renovation of Somawathi Stupa

  An Opportunity of a Lifetime

The youth of Colombo were blessed with a noble opportunity to take part in a very sacred project involving the renovation of the Somawathi Stupa that is situated in a very remote area in Sri Lanka; inside a forest reserve, over 250 km away from the capital city of Colombo.

This stupa is regarded as one of the main places of worship for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. The significance of this temple is the belief that the sacred right tooth relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined in this very stupa and it is said to have been built over 2000 years ago. Therefore, most of the Buddhist devotees make regular visits to this temple to offer their homage.

When the monks of the temple mentioned that a proper renovation hadn’t been done in over 50 years, the youth enthusiastically offered their support in many ways for this unique activity, which is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They were able to supply various building materials that were needed, as well as lend a hand in the labor activities that took place. The completion of this project filled the hearts of the youth with inexpressible joy and bliss and they offered this act of Seva at the Lotus Feet of their dearest Lord!
