Serving Those Who Serve

“Start the day with love, fill the day with love,

Spend the day with love, end the day with love. This is the way to God.”

Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Although the month of March arrived with a fanfare of trouble for the world, the youth were determined to continue serving others during every opportunity that presented itself. To the youth’s delight, with Swami’s Grace, the serving of refreshments for the government workers continued even amidst the country’s lockdown. The workers usually start their work on an empty stomach, with no time for a break till past noon and then too, only to drink a cup of tea to keep themselves going.

On the various occasions they visited, they were served hot tea or coffee along with snacks such as biscuits, cakes and sweets. On some days they were given full meals of yellow rice with traditional curries, roti or paratha with tempered golden dhal, fried rice topped with a milky stew of carrots and soya. The workers enjoyed the meals with gusto and left with a happy heart and a full stomach!

Meals with Love

The Mahinda Vidyala located in Mirihana focuses on special-needs children from low income families. The youth helped provide the school with dry rations every week to enable the students’ mothers to cook a mid-day meal for the children and staff throughout the months of January and February. In March they were sponsored, along with the aid of their parents, to go on a school trip to the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Jaffna. The bus was packed with around 40 people which included children, teachers and parents who enjoyed the journey immensely.

Due to the prevailing situation, the school has closed for the safety of both the students and staff. Once activities resume, the youth involved in this project will be looking to work with the school management for ways to make this programme more sustainable in the coming months.
